Our story

The idea of Sewcial Sewing was sparked in 2021 when Perrie Hewitt and Sheryle Bartos, the founders, met during sewing classes at their local fabric shop.

They became close friends and dreamt about sharing their love for sewing and the benefits that come from it. In October 2022 the first Sewcial Sewing get-together was hosted and the community has grown ever since. We host monthly and fortnightly Sewcial Sewing meetups, and regular workshops, arrange guest speakers and organise sewing retreats.

Sewing education lies at the heart of Sewcial Sewing's mission, and we are advocates of sharing as much information as possible. Our in-person workshops and meetups, social media platforms, and website dispense a wealth of sewing-related content. From tutorials, tips, fabric recommendations, and pattern reviews, the community provides an array of resources, ensuring that every sewist, beginner, or advanced can access the knowledge they seek.

We hope that our love for sewing shines through and encourages everyone to pick up needle and thread and join us on their sewing journey!

Building a sewing community one stitch at a time
— Sewcial Sewing

I started sewing in 2017 when I was looking for a creative outlet and a way to meet new people. I found a 10 week evening sewing course at RMIT Fashion college and signed up.

I loved the course, but hated what I created. An Aline skirt and a pair of pajama bottoms, neither of which fit, but it didn’t matter I was hooked. I had lost touch with my inner creativity and the idea that I could imagine something, assemble it and then wear it stuck with me.

After that course finished I was lucky enough to find a local Saturday sewing class at The Cloth Shop and I haven’t stopped sewing since.

In 2021 I moved to a new area and the first thing I did (before we had finished unpacking) was find somewhere for me to meet more sewists and continue taking lessons. Apart from the sewing (which is amazing), what I love most about this creative pursuit is the sewing community. I have met so many awesome people, made life long connections and have never known a more supportive group of people - Perrie Hewitt

I first started my sewing journey at the age of 15. This happened at the school I attended, where I studied Home Economics, and back then this also included sewing. However, my sewing passion did not begin until later in my life, mainly after retirement from the workplace and it was during this period that my skill level improved immensely. Having more time on my plate, I undertook sewing tuition, which put me on the right track and I have just kept lifting myself constantly, always looking for that new challenge:

It was during this time that my friendship with Perrie took place. We sometimes travelled in the hunt for the right fabric and it was on one of these trips we first got serious about Perrie’s idea of gathering together some like-minded people to form a sewing community. The basic concept was to bring together a group of people who loved sewing as much as we did and loved the idea of Sewcial Sewing. People who were open to the ideology of sharing, caring, and helping one another to build sewing skills, as well as lift their confidence and self -esteem.

We are now three-quarters into our first year and all of the above concepts have well and truly evolved, plus more. I love being part of this community and would recommend this concept to anyone who loves sewing like we all do- Sheryle Bartos
