Beginner Friendly Sewing Patterns

When I started to sew one of my first questions was “What pattern should I use?” and this is still one of the most common questions I get asked to date.

I had no idea what patterns to use when I started to sew and I was also a little intimated to ask. So my first recommendation for any beginner sewists is to not do what I did and ask as many people as you can. The sewing community is full of amazing people that are always willing to help, as long as you don’t mind being engrossed in a sewing fuelled conversation for 30 mins.

There are many, many sewing patterns to choose from but my first choice will always be an independent pattern designer. I have a number of reasons for this that are listed in this blog if you are interested.

So listed below is a group of patterns I have personally sewn or someone close to me has recommended as suitable and encouraging for beginners.

  1. Tessuti- Anita Ponti Pants

  2. The Sewing Workshop- Eureka Top

  3. Tessuti- Hazelwood Top

  4. Pattern Emporium- Keep It Simple Tee

  5. Pattern Emporium- Unwind Sweater

  6. Sew House Seven- Toaster Sweater

  7. Tilly and the Buttons- Cleo Pinafore

  8. True Bias- Ogden Cami

  9. True Bias- Marlo Sweater

  10. Peppermint Patterns- The Bardon Dress

  11. Peppermint Patterns- Peplum Top
